Maintaining healthy blood glucose and insulin levels is increasingly viewed as important for metabolic health and overall wellbeing. However, meals rich in refined carbohydrates and fats can contribute to unhealthy spikes in these markers.
A new study published in the journal Nutrients, conducted by researchers at the Oxford Brookes Center for Nutrition and Health, shows that Reducose®/STORMe, a natural mulberry leaf water extract, can help control elevations in blood sugar and insulin after consuming a meal.
In this double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial with healthy adults,
- All three levels tested (200mg, 225mg, 250mg) significantly reduced total blood glucose responses by 30-33% compared to placebo during the 2-hour postprandial period.
- All three levels tested (200mg, 225mg, 250mg) significantly reduced the peak blood glucose responses by 26-32% compared to placebo during the 2-hour postprandial period, with the mean peak glucose response across all three dose groups being 6.0mmol/L or less (levels adjusted to baseline)
- All three levels also significantly diminished total insulin release by 31-38% versus placebo during the postprandial window
- These same three levels also significantly lowered peak insulin release by 27-40% versus placebo during the postprandial window (levels adjusted to baseline).
The findings of this study confirmed previous clinical trial results that investigated the blood glucose and insulin health benefits of Reducose®/ STORMe, this time in response to a complete meal with macronutrient composition that was representative of the average Western diet. The study showed significant reductions in both peak and total glucose and insulin responses following a mixed meal, building on evidence from previous clinical studies consistently demonstrating efficacy of 250 mg Reducose®/ STORMe following consumption of maltodextrin (Lown et al., 2017) or sucrose (Thondre et al., 2021) alone or in combination with other ingredients (Mohamed et al., 2023).
These results suggest that Reducose®/ STORMe can help support a healthy metabolic state by moderating exaggerated glycaemic and insulinaemic responses seen after consuming modern carb- and fat-rich diets, at even lower doses than previously reported. The study was not powered to detect significant differences among Reducose levels, but additional research will be conducted to further evaluate.
Despite the many benefits of maintaining glucose and insulin levels within the healthy range, doing so often requires significant lifestyle changes, making it difficult to achieve. Reducose®/ STORMe can be formulated into a variety of applications including foods, beverages and supplements as a simple, natural, and effective nutritional tool for promoting healthy blood sugar control and metabolic resilience.
